TN: Wedding registrations to go online from Aug

CHENNAI: Months after launching online registration for properties in Tamil Nadu wedding registrations are pushed to cyberspace from August. The registration department is conducting a pilot run for the web-based marriage registrations in a fortnight.A circular from the office of inspector general of registration on Saturday said that a decision has been made to introduce online registration of marriage, chit and society registration from August. Currently, it takes three days to one week for processing the marriage certificate. TCS has designed the software for the purpose as part of the second phase of upgrading the registration department's portal with an information technology-enabled service, STAR 2.0 (Simplified and Transparent Administration of Registration) for facilitating speedy registrations. This would be reduced to a day.

While training for registration department officials will be given this month end, the pilot run for the new facility would be carried out between August 1 and 15.On an average, 80,000 marriages are registered under the Tamil Nadu Registration of Marriages Act, 2009 every year.According to the existing procedure, files in applications for marriage certificates must be provided to the sub-registrar office. Currently, it takes three days to one week for processing the marriage certificate. This would be reduced to a day.
