Conservancy workers protest privatisation move

Conservancy workers said they opposed the privatisation move as private agencies would not pay them properly. CHENNAI: Chennai Corporation conservancy workers affiliated to CITU and a few other trade unions have threatened to go on an indefinite strike starting November 27 to oppose the civic body’s move to privatise conservancy operations in eight more zones The civic body has over 7,700 permanent and 4,100 contract workers. Sources in the corporation said it was difficult to provide salaries and benefits to all conservancy workers because of which privatisation was a good move.P Srinivasulu of CITU said the workers would hold a hunger strike on Thursday. There are 3,400 staffs working in three different zones -- Adyar, Teynampet, and Kodambakkam -- where private player Ramky has been carrying out operations.The civic body recently floated tenders to outsource conservancy operations in other zones like Thiruvottiyur, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Perungudi, Sholinganallur and Manali.The unions are demanding cancellation of the tenders.
