HC notice to govt over PIL on winding up Tasmac

CHENNAI: The Madras high court has ordered notice to the state government on a PIL seeking direction to the authorities to wind up Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation ( Tasmac ), which sells liquor, with immediate effect.A division bench of Justice M Venugopal and Justice R Pongiappan passed the order on a plea moved by D Selvakumar, a resident of Coimbatore.Originally, the petitioner approached the court seeking direction to the Comibatore district collector to close a Tasmac shop, which was allegedly located in a residential area at Masakalipalayam, causing great inconvenience to passers-by and school children. “When the constitution says that no one has the right to take the life of others, the state is doing so through TASMAC by selling liquor to its people,” the petitioner said.“It is well said by wise men that closure of half the pubs and bottle stores would lead to closure of half the hospitals and jails,” the petitioner said, while noting that alcohol had been the scourge of human society since time immemorial and it continued to cost countless human lives and cause terrible misery to millions throughout the world.Noting that alcohol takes human mind to a subhuman level, the petitioner said soaring crime rates, domestic violence, road accidents, increasing instances of mental illnesses and millions of broken homes bear mute testimony to the destructive power of alcohol.The petitioner also cited various articles published in newspapers on crimes reported due to alcoholism.The petitioner further submitted that, “It is high time that the state decides whether to continue with the policy of running liquor business or end it, mere revenue only would not improve the standard of living of the people.
