Quake hits Bay of Bengal, tremors felt in Chennai

CHENNAI: An earthquake measuring 5.4 magnitude on the Richter scale hit the Bay of Bengal region around 7.02am, according to Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System monitored by INCOIS, Hyderabad. No casualty or damage to property was reported.“Based on historical earthquake and tsunami data, tsunami threat does not exist for the Indian Ocean. But no tsunami threat exists to India.The earthquake hit about 606km off Chennai coast with the epicentre at a depth of 10km in the sea. IOTWMS-TSP India will monitor sea level gauges near to epicentre and report if any tsunami activity is observed,” the system alert said. Parts of Chennai felt tremors.
