PUDUCHERRY: DMK president M K Stalin on Sunday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of attempting to usurp power in the Union territory of Puducherry through the back door.Stalin, who called on chief minister V Narayanasamy and his cabinet colleagues to express solidarity to the ongoing stir against lieutenant governor Kiran Bedi , alleged that the BJP had attempted to create trouble for the ruling Congress party using the lieutenant governor since it did not have the necessary strength, support and courage.Stalin said Bedi, who served Delhi as an effective police officer during her service, was now reduced to executing the orders of the Prime Minister to curb the democratic rights of people of the Union territory. He demanded that the Centre recall Kiran Bedi.“The lieutenant governor has attempted to turn Union territory into a Thihar jail and treat the people of Puducherry as jail inmates. The Centre must intervene immediately. It is a shame on the part of the Centre for failing to intervene. The DMK condemns the Centre for its failure and demands for the immediate recall of Bedi,” he said.Stalin argued Bedi had not cooperated with the elected Congress government since the day she assumed charge. “It is an issue concerning the welfare of the people. Recalling Bedi is the only solution,” he added.
