Sterlite reopening: Tuticorin welcomes SC order

MADURAI: The Supreme Court order setting aside the National Green Tribunal (NGT) permission to reopen Sterlite Industries plant in Tuticorin has gave a sigh of relief for people of Tuticorin who are opposing its reopening.The district police and district administration too have expressed a sense of relief. We have strong technical points to defend the reason behind sealing Sterlite,” said Tuticorin district collector Sandeep Nanduri.Krishnamoorthi, one of the leaders heading the anti-Sterlite protests, said it is the first big victory for the people of Tuticorin and all who stood with them in the protest.

MADURAI: The Supreme Court order setting aside the National Green Tribunal (NGT) permission to reopen Sterlite Industries plant in Tuticorin has gave a sigh of relief for people of Tuticorin who are opposing its reopening.The district police and district administration too have expressed a sense of relief. Close to 2,000 police personnel had been deployed in and around Tuticorin city to keep situation under control if a verdict came in favour of Sterlite.The police were prepared with barricades and additional strength in sensitive places to bring the situation under control in case of protests.“It is a happy verdict welcomed by the people of Tuticorin. The legal battle will continue in the high court. We have strong technical points to defend the reason behind sealing Sterlite,” said Tuticorin district collector Sandeep Nanduri.Krishnamoorthi, one of the leaders heading the anti-Sterlite protests, said it is the first big victory for the people of Tuticorin and all who stood with them in the protest. “Sacrifices of the people have not gone waste.
