Chennai: Two engineers suspended after woman gets electrocuted

Greater Chennai Corporation has suspended two electrical engineers in Thiruvika Nagar Zone (zone 6) after a 35 year old woman was electrocuted in Pulianthope on Monday.

The incident occurred on Monday in area of Narayana Samy Street, Pulianthope, a 35 year old woman stepped on live electrical cable prior to the horrendous incident the residents of area filed a complaint about civic issues in the locality, pointing to the risk of electrocution in such waterlogged situation.

The officials suspended are a zonal assistant electrical engineer, Kannan and an engineer, Venkatraman. According to officials the engineers had reported that work on rectifying default had been completed after the complaint was registered by the residents but the incident occurred when the civic officials rectified the defect.

On Monday and Tuesday several high level inspection were carried out after the Commissioner G Prakash called for report, the civic body directed 700 workers to identify defects in 2.85 lakh streetlights and 7,220 pillar boxes in the city. According to the assessment by civic officials more than 10% of the streets have been dug up by various line agencies ahead of the northeast monsoon increasing the risk of such incidents. In a statement by officials ‘’all the electrical lines are placed two feet inside the road and there is no chance of these protruding onto the roadside. These are well concealed. Regular inspections are carried out’’.

Commissioner G Prakash has called for a meeting on Wednesday evening and will review the status of the work. Corporation officials stated ‘multilevel’ inquiry will be conducted. The corporation will ascertain why there was stagnation at the spot and whether any department had dug up the road.

Meanwhile many residents who called Corporation helpline 1913 have complained that there has been delay in response from officials. Many lower civic officials have also closed the complaint without rectifying defects reported by residents at least 138 civic complaints under different haeds are pending in various departments.
