IMD official has stressed that if the low pressure doesn`t intensify then it may move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast and bring rainfall to parts of north Tamil Nadu.

Chennai and some other districts of Tamil Nadu are expected to witness heavy rainfall from October 19-21 due to the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, predicts Indian Meteorological Department.

Chennai and surrounding districts could witness light to moderate rains over the next four days after a hot week. This is the direct result of a low-pressure area which is likely to form over the East-Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman sea on October 19.

Thunderstorm with light to moderate rain is likely to occur at a few places over Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kalakurichi, Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Dharmapuri, Salem, Krishnagiri, Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam districts.

The favourite wind pattern for North Tamil Nadu persists with winds from North-West and a synoptic circulation in the Bay of Bengal. The above wind pattern will persist for the next 3-4 days and then it will be caught by the westerly trough and dragged up north. But till then we are in for a treat," weather blogger Pradeep John wrote in his blog.

Meanwhile, an IMD official has stressed that if the low pressure doesn`t intensify then it may move towards Andhra Pradesh coast and bring rainfall to parts of north Tamil Nadu.

"As of now, the city is likely to receive rainfall till October 19. After that, it depends on the movement of the system. If it intensifies into a depression, it could recurve and move towards the Odisha coast, which means we may not receive rainfall. If it does not intensify, it may move to Andhra Pradesh coast and could bring rainfall to parts of north Tamil Nadu," said N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, IMD.
