These electric vehicles of MAuto, a private autorickshaw service provider, operated by women will go around some localities in the city, serving up everything from Sulaimani chai to chocolate chip cookies to people.

“Many commuters waiting at a bus stop may not have the time to walk to the nearest tea shop to grab a bite of cookies or ‘medhu vada’ or even a cup of tea. For them, this service will help. Also, for senior citizens staying home, it will be a refreshing change to buy when we travel past their residence,” one of the lady van operators Princi told The Hindu.

Mohamed Rahamathullah of Gilli Chai also told The Hindu that a new stall had been opened at the Saidapet Metro Rail station for commuters. “The idea of this mobile shop is to serve quality food to commuters. These vehicles will take predefined routes and stop at predefined destinations,” he added.

Besides, the “Pollution-free Tamil Nadu” scheme of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the tax waivers provided for the Electric Vehicles has encouraged Gilli Chai in bringing out this innovative business model into reality. 

After it numerous stationary stalls dotting Chennai streets, Gilli chai is making a difference through zero-emission vehicles converted into chai outlets. As these autos serve hot chai and other snacks along the streets, the fleet would be mostly be managed by the women-majority workforce. 

You have seen the food trucks, now get set to see the food tuk-tuks as autorickshaws get retro-fitted into roving restaurants, says the Times of India. 

The chai autos will be completely managed and operated by women at various stages. The first chai auto is being driven by 33-year-lold Mohanna Sundari who says she has been an autorickshaw driver for a few years now. 

According to Rahmatullah, the Gilli Chai firm is launching three conventional brick and mortar outlets which will double up as tea refill stations for the chai autos.
