Chennai: The key Governing Council meeting of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) an ally of the ruling AIADMK in which a political decision on its demand for 20 per cent reservation for Vanniyars in education and government jobs has been deferred to 31 January. In a statement Party president G K Mani said the meeting which was scheduled to be held in virtual mode today has been postponed to 31 January due to administrative reasons. The meeting was expected to take a decision on whether it will continue in the AIADMK-BJP alliance or not. The party had said that the meeting would take a decision on the alliance for the ensuing Assembly elections due in April-May. The meeting would be held in the presence of PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss youth wing leader and former Union Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss Vanniyar Sangam and other members to discuss the issue of reservations for Vanniyars in continuation of meeting held on 9 January Mani said. On 9 January Dr Ramadoss had said that the party was modifying its demand of 20 per cent reservation for Vanniyars to internal quota for them within the MBC quota. The PMK also staged a spate of protests to press their demand for 20 per cent quota for Vanniyars and one such agitation in December 2020 turned violent when the party cadres were stopped from marching towards Chennai.
