The Tamil Nadu government has announced further relaxation in 27 districts of the state, including Chennai after a decline in Covid-19 cases in the state. Chief Minister M.K. Chief Minister Stalin said in a statement that tea shops can be opened from 6 am to 5 pm. He appealed to the people to use utensils instead of plastic bags to take hot tea home. These shops have been closed since the imposition of lockdown in the state on May 10 due to the second wave of Covid-19 and these restrictions have been increased from time to time.

The statement said that shops selling sweets etc. will be allowed to be opened between 8 am to 2 pm and only parcel services will be allowed. The Chief Minister said that e-seva centres for many government services like obtaining certificates would also be operational from Monday. He said that the offices of building construction companies will also be allowed to function with 50 percent staff. Permission for construction work has already been given.

Except for the 11 districts with the highest Covid-19 cases, the new relaxation will be applicable in the remaining 27 districts. These include Chennai and its surrounding districts.

The eleven exempted districts are Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Karur, Namakkal, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai.

Earlier on Friday, The state government had announced that salons, parks and state-run liquor shops will reopen on June 14 in 27 districts after a gap of thirty-five days in the state and extended the lockdown till the morning of June 21. Religious and tourist places will remain closed and no public or private bus service will be started during the extended period of lockdown.

However, when the government announced the opening of Tasmac liquor shops from Friday but did not allow the opening of tea shops, the government`s move was widely criticized on social media.
