more-in For the third day on Friday, doctors in government hospitals boycotted outpatient department work for two hours. OP services were affected in all the hospitals, the doctors admitted, but maintained that the protest would continue till Tuesday. The doctors launched an agitation on Tuesday and went on a token hunger fast on Wednesday to emphasise their demand that the State government get exemption from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for admission to postgraduate and undergraduate medical courses. A. Ramalingam, State secretary of Service Doctors and Post Graduate Association, said the Medical Council of India’s decision to deny extra marks to candidates for each year of work done in primary health centres was unacceptable. “We have evolved a method and built the health system in our State ensuring it benefits all sections of doctors. The incentive is that we will return to work for the government. Denying us these few marks and paving the way for non-service candidates would be a disservice to all the hard work done so far,” Dr. Ramalingam said. Ordinance demanded The association has also demanded that a special ordinance be promulgated to protect the rights of the doctors in the State service to continue the existing pattern of quota and post-graduate admission process. If by Tuesday the decision is not reversed then doctors would boycott OP services completely, Dr. Ramalingam added.
