Man killed in spat over feeding of stray dog

A 35-year-old autorickshaw driver was murdered by a rag-picker for feeding a stray dog with non-vegetarian food in Villivakkam. Meanwhile, Vijay, 35, a resident of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar in Villivakkam, developed affection for the dog. In the meantime, neighbours rushed Vijay to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital where he died on Thursday morning. Police said Vellaiyan, 30, a rag-picker, was taking care of the stray dog. In spite of the warning, Vijay fed biryani to the dog on Wednesday night and reportedly attempted to take it to his house.

Meanwhile, Vijay, 35, a resident of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar in Villivakkam, developed affection for the dog. He started feeding it with left-over pieces of meat from a stall located nearby. Vellaiyan, who opposed Vijay’s actions, quarrelled with him a few days ago, the police said. In spite of the warning, Vijay fed biryani to the dog on Wednesday night and reportedly attempted to take it to his house. Infuriated, Vellaiyan took an iron rod and allegedly attacked him and fled the scene of crime. Police inaction Passers-by, who saw Vijay lying in a pool of blood, called the ICF police. But the police personnel asked them to call the Otteri police citing jurisdictional issue. Finally, the issue was brought to the attention of higher police officials and only after that was the case taken up for investigation, sources said. In the meantime, neighbours rushed Vijay to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital where he died on Thursday morning. The ICF police have registered a case and arrested Vellaiyan, who was hiding in Korattur.
