Leading restaurants in TN down shutters protest steep GST levy

CHENNAI: Leading restaurants in Tamil Nadu downed their shutters to protest the higher GST (goods and services tax) levy on the hospitality sector. on Monday said around 1.5 lakh restaurants, bakeries and teashops would take part in the strike across the state, of which around 50,000 are situated in Chennai and suburbs. However, small eateries, bakeries and tea shops remained open.The 24-hour shutdown has been called by the Tamil Nadu Hotels Association and The Chennai Hotels Association after the Centre had proposed GST ranging between 5% and 18% for non-air conditioned and air-conditioned restaurants.Though all kinds of restaurants, bakeries and teashops were expected to participate in the strike, only branded restaurants were closed in Chennai.Hotel associations
