Protesters seek closure of new TASMAC outlet in Selaiyur

Residents staged a demonstration in front of a new Tasmac outlet opened in Annai Sathya Nagar in Selaiyur on Thursday. After the Supreme Court banned the sale of liquor on Highways, TASMAC officials were forced to shift the outlets inside villages and towns, triggering protests in many areas. Women protesters picked up an argument with the policemen stating that the liquor shop was located near farmlands and wells and feared that the place would be covered with garbage. When the protesters finally dispersed, they said that they would not allow the shop to be reopened again. The protesters said that repeated petitions to the government officials failed to evoke any response, forcing them to take to the streets.

The protesters said that repeated petitions to the government officials failed to evoke any response, forcing them to take to the streets. Tambaram MLA S.R. Raja intervened and held negotiations with the police. When the protesters finally dispersed, they said that they would not allow the shop to be reopened again.
