Madipakkam Neer Nilai Punaramaippu Kuzhu of Sabari Green Foundation has made a representation to Greater Chennai Corporation seeking measures to arrest discharge of sewage into Naicker Kuttai, a pond at Mahalakshmi Nagar in Madipakkam, through stormwater drains. This July, the forum de-silted the pond with earth movers, raised bunds and facilitated the creation of a rainwater channel to the tank. Native tree saplings were also planted along the bunds. However, within a few weeks, the forum found to its dismay that its efforts to restore the waterbody had gone in vain, as sewage was being let into the waterbody. “We restored the pond so that the groundwater table is recharged when the northeast monsoon sets in. The pond could cater to the water needs of residents of Mahalakshmi Nagar, Kubera Nagar, Sigamani Nagar, Enfield Avenue, Thanthai Periyar Nagar Extension, Lakshmi Nagar, Rajarajeshwari Nagar and Rajalakshmi Nagar,” says P. Saravana Kumar, a member of the forum. The forum has also asked the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply Sewerage Board to construct a underground sewage system in the locality at the earliest. When contacted, an official of Zone 14 of Greater Chennai Corporation said steps would be taken to collect the sewage through a sewer suction truck and block the inlet system.
