Tribal people seek community certificate

Members of the Malai Vedan tribal community living in the Nilgiris petitioned the District Collector during the weekly grievance day meeting here at the Collectorate in Udhagamandalam on Monday, demanding community certificates. In their petition, the residents said that around 200 people belonging to the Malai Vendan tribal community were living in the villages of Thattaneri and Pannimaram. They demanded that the district administration take steps to hand over the certificates to them. The residents claimed that they had been demanding community certificates for the last 17 years, but were being turned away by the district administration. District Revenue Officer T Baskarapandi received petitions pertaining to demands for family cards, pensions and basic amenities.

The residents claimed that they had been demanding community certificates for the last 17 years, but were being turned away by the district administration. Protest The residents, who staged a protest outside the Collector’s office, said that their children were unable to enrol in colleges and for higher education because they did not get the certificates. They demanded that the district administration take steps to hand over the certificates to them. Basic amenities The district administration stated that they had received a total of 161 petitions during the grievance meeting. District Revenue Officer T Baskarapandi received petitions pertaining to demands for family cards, pensions and basic amenities. The district administration also handed over a cheque for ?50,000 to the family of a resident of Denad in Kil Kotagiri, who drowned in a river during a temple festival recently.
