Traffic island, park to be removed

  • | Wednesday | 25th April, 2018

Officials are considering changes to a traffic island near Charring Cross in Udhagamandalam, to ease traffic flow. Officials said that discussions were being held with Highways Department to get an approval to demolish the traffic island. The traffic island on Ettines Road creates a bottleneck and allows only vehicles proceeding towards Coonoor from Udhagamandalam to use the main highway. P. Ganesh, a motorist, said that during peak hours, traffic comes to a standstill at the location as TNSTC buses too have to park along the stretch. Vehicles coming from the other direction have to take a turn around the island to reach the road, causing confusion among motorists who use the route for the first time.

The police are considering changes to the existing traffic islands at Charring Cross, including the small park at the entrance to the Garden Road, which prevents vehicles coming from the District Collector's office to take a left turn to the Garden Road because of incorrect design. There are also plans to widen a section of the road leading to the Government Botanical Garden at the Stanes Junction, officials said. The police plan to change barriers around the Adam's fountains have been thwarted by local residents. They fear that the fountain constructed by the British in 1886 would be damaged.
