Residents and shop keepers complain that the vehicles diverted to bypass Ukkadam-Athupalam stretch for accessing and exiting Coimbatore city has further worsened the traffic woes along the narrow stretch. The diversion to aid the Ukkadam-Athupalam flyover came to effect from June 3. As per the current diversion plan, heavy vehicles from Tiruchi road and Avinashi road to Pollachi and Palakkad have to take Nanjundapuram Road to reach Podanur and take alternative routes. Similarly, all heavy vehicles from Palakkad Road to Avinashi Road and Tiruchi Road have been diverted via Podanur and Nanjundapuram to reach Ramanathapuram junction and further proceed to destinations. According to people from Nanjundarapuram, they had been complaining to authorities of traffic snarls due to lack of width of the road. The problem is turning worse because of parking of vehicles on Nanjundapuram Road especially for 200 meters from the Ramanathapuram signal. “The current diversion of heavy vehicles via the narrow stretch connecting Podanur and Ramanathapuram has added to the traffic problems,” said K. Murali, a vendor. With medians already in place on the narrow stretch, the movement of two-wheelers and cars along with heavy vehicles has been affecting residents. When contacted, a senior official with the traffic police said that the traffic snarl was a cause of worry only during the peak hours when heavy vehicles diverted from other roads use the stretch. The official said that diversion to and fro Avinashi Road via Singanallur-Vellalore-Podanur stretch will be taken into consideration if the choking persists. “The diversion via Singanallur-Vellalore-Podanur can be implemented if movement of heavy vehicles via Nanjandapuram road creates further problems. As of now we have not received any grievance from road users,” said the official.
