AIDWA to protest against water contract to Suez

  • | Saturday | 14th July, 2018

The All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) will conduct a protest against the Coimbatore Corporation awarding the water supply contract to Suez Projects, said the AIDWA national vice president U. Vasuki. Alternatively, the Corporation could have chosen to execute the water supply project by hiring qualified engineers or the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, she said. The contract agreement with Suez left scope for scams and that appeared to be the reason for politicians and administrators evincing interest in the contract. It was unacceptable that the Corporation's copy of the contract with Suez Projects was unavailable with the Commissioner, who considering the public outcry, should have made it available to the public. Addressing reporters here on Friday, she said the organisation would conduct a door-to-door campaign, meet women on the perils of the project and then stage a protest.

more-in The All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) will conduct a protest against the Coimbatore Corporation awarding the water supply contract to Suez Projects, said the AIDWA national vice president U. Vasuki. Addressing reporters here on Friday, she said the organisation would conduct a door-to-door campaign, meet women on the perils of the project and then stage a protest. It was unacceptable that the Corporation's copy of the contract with Suez Projects was unavailable with the Commissioner, who considering the public outcry, should have made it available to the public. The project, Ms. Vasuki claimed, would result in a situation where water would not be treated as an essential service but as a commodity and could result in closure of public taps. The contract agreement with Suez left scope for scams and that appeared to be the reason for politicians and administrators evincing interest in the contract. Alternatively, the Corporation could have chosen to execute the water supply project by hiring qualified engineers or the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, she said. The Municipal Administration Minister S.P. Velumani was making contradictory statements regarding the project, she alleged and asked the State Government to come clean on who was responsible for releasing from the Chembarapakkam lake that led to flooding in Chennai a couple of years ago. Ms. Vasuki also spoke about the State Government's attempts at muzzling protests to the eight-lane green corridor project connecting Salem and Chennai and said widening of the existing roads was sufficient. She also said the AIDWA wanted the State Government to address the questions raised in the Comptroller and Auditor General's report about permission given to Isha Foundation for building construction.
