more-in Coimbatore-based Ganga Hospital has opened an Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Unit to perform breast reconstruction surgery on women who have undergone partial or total mastectomy (removal of breast) for cancer. The new unit will perform advanced breast reconstruction techniques such as the Deep Inferior Epigastric Artery Perforator Flap wherein a breast is made using the skin, fat and blood vessels that are surgically removed from the lower abdomen. The new unit will function under the leadership of S. Raja Sabapathy, chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery, Hand and Microsurgery and Burns. “Many women beat breast cancer and want to forget it. But each time they see the mirror they get reminded of it. They get noticed when they go out for public functions and women are very conscious of this throughout their life. In western countries such as the U.S. or the U.K., it is mandatory that women are given all the options for breast reconstruction, as it is believed that breast reconstruction is a part of breast cancer treatment,” said a statement issued by the hospital. Doctors at the unit will discuss all the options for breast reconstruction if surgical removal is required. Patients will be informed about the type of reconstruction best suited for them, based on the need for radiotherapy, associated medical problems like diabetes and hypertension, previous surgeries undergone, availability of tissue in the patient and their expectations. Surgeons will choose a method with the least complications so that radiotherapy and chemotherapy are not delayed.
