Protest against caste discrimination: Feast held at Tirupur dalit cook’s home

TIRUPUR: Taking a strong stand against caste discrimination , more than 80 people from Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam and other parties took part in a feast held in the home of a dalit woman, who faced opposition from non-dalit parents for cooking food for their children studying in a government high school in Tirupur district.When P Pappal of Thirumalaigoundenpalayam in Kuttagam panchayat was transferred to a government high school in the same village, many parents of non-dalit children had opposed it. Giving in to their pressure, Avinashi block development officer had cancelled her transfer order and directed her to work in the government school where she had been working as a cook for 12 years.But after the district administration intervened, Pappal was posted again in Thirumalaigoundenpalayam government high school on Friday.However, around 30 children from non-dalit families had not attended the school for the last two days since their parents didn’t want them to eat food prepared by a dalit woman.On Sunday, more than 80 members of the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, Dalit Viduthalai Katchi and Adi Tamizhar Jananayaga Peravai visited Pappal’s home.
