Motor vehicle strike: more than 15,000 vehicles stay off roads in Coimbatore

With the strike nearly complete in Kerala, State-owned buses from the neighbouring State suspended services to and from Coimbatore on Tuesday. A demonstration staged by the Coimbatore District Tourist Taxis and Tempo Employees Association at Gandhi Park was attended by 250 persons. Around 15,000 vehicles, mainly autorickshaws, stayed off the roads. Operation of vans and taxis were partially hit due to the strike.

Around 15,000 vehicles, mainly autorickshaws, stayed off the roads. A demonstration staged by the Coimbatore District Tourist Taxis and Tempo Employees Association at Gandhi Park was attended by 250 persons. All autorickshaw drivers’ trade unions under the leadership of P.K. Sugumaran staged a protest in Gandhipuram. The police said that 110 drivers including a woman were detained as they were not given permission for the agitation. Those detained were released on bail. Operation of vans and taxis were partially hit due to the strike. With the strike nearly complete in Kerala, State-owned buses from the neighbouring State suspended services to and from Coimbatore on Tuesday.
