Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has warned telecom companies of stern action if they damage pipelines while digging roads to repair cables.“Orders have been issued to the officials to slap penalty on telecom companies, if pipeline damages are proven to be done by them. Their work will be cancelled after they are issued warning,” said a senior corporation official. The move comes after the leakage in pipelines at several places where telecom companies had dug up roads was cited as reason for delayed water supply in several areas. In the last 10 days, residents of Saibaba Colony, Peelamedu and Singanallur had filed multiple complaints with the civic body, stating that they had been receiving drinking water only once in 10 to 15 days and that water was contaminated.Telecom companies have damaged drinking water and sewer pipelines at more than 80 places in Saibaba Colony, a local resident said. “We were forced to purchase water even when all the reservoirs were brimming and surplus water was left out,” said C Nithya, a resident of Peelamedu.Meanwhile, acknowledging the 10-day delay in supplying water to Saibaba Colony, the official told TOI that it was not only because of leakage in pipelines, but also due to power shutdown. “We conducted a review meetings and water is supplied to the locality,” the official said, explaining that apart from two to three areas, almost all parts of the city receive water in four to five days. “The residents will soon get steady supply of water under the 24/7 drinking water supply project.”The civic body had issued circulars in May to stop unauthorized road digging. “Following repeated complaints, the civic body had then stopped all digging work.
