It should also be converted into a hub-and-spoke airport so that international travellers could clear immigration here. Chairman of the forum A. Sakthivel and vice-chairperson Vanitha Mohan submitted a memorandum in this regard to the Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu here on Tuesday. Recently, 11 international carriers were given permission to operate out of the newly constructed Kannur Airport though it does not come under BASA regulations.

Chairman of the forum A. Sakthivel and vice-chairperson Vanitha Mohan submitted a memorandum in this regard to the Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu here on Tuesday. Coimbatore International Airport is the catchment area for the seven districts and so the number of businessmen travelling to international destinations from here is high. In the recent months, flight connectivity from Coimbatore to New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru has increased and all these flights are operating to full capacity. However, several international carriers are denied permission to operate flights to Coimbatore as it does not come under the Bilateral Air Service Arrangement, which covers 18 cities in the country. Recently, 11 international carriers were given permission to operate out of the newly constructed Kannur Airport though it does not come under BASA regulations. Mr. Sakthivel and Ms. Mohan said Coimbatore should be included under BASA. It should also be converted into a hub-and-spoke airport so that international travellers could clear immigration here. Such a facility would foster economic development of the region that handled a significant volume of exports, they said.
