Four killed as ambulance crashes into oil tanker

Krishnagiri: A 44-year-old man, who was getting treatment for H1N1, and two of his family members were killed after the ambulance he was being taken to a hospital in Bengaluru crashed into an empty oil tanker that was parked on the roadside in Hosur here on the early hours of Sunday. The second driver of the ambulance was also killed in the incident, while the main driver is battling for his life in hospital.The deceased were identified as Selvam, of Pennadam in Cuddalore, his wife Kathimathi, 38, his relative Saravanan, 26, and the ambulance’s second driver Madankumar, 22, from Trichy.According to police, Selvam, who runs a fancy shop in in Cuddalore, was admitted to the government hospital in Trichy with symptoms of H1N1. “He was taken to Bengaluru in an ambulance on Saturday after doctors at the government hospital referred him to a private hospital there for further treatment. Jayasurya was also admitted to the same hospital, where his condition is said to be critical. Police also removed the damaged vehicles and cleared the traffic on the stretch.The Hudco police have registered a case and further probe is on.In another incident reported in Namakkal, an AIADMK functionary was killed after a government bus rammed his two-wheeler at Bommakuttaimedu.The deceased was identified as Duraisamy, 54, who is the Kollimalai AIADMK branch secretary. The incident took place when he attempted to cross the Namakkal-Salem road at Bommakuttaimedu. “A government bus suddenly hit his two-wheeler and he was thrown off the bike,” a police officer said.He was taken to Namakkal hospital, where he died without responding to treatment. Earlier, social welfare minister V Saroja had visited him in hospital.
