Coimbatore: According to the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), customers will be paying much lesser for the natural gas used in the kitchens in future, thanks to its piped natural gas supply project.IOCL, which had bagged the tender for city gas distribution, is planning to bring nine lakh households under its piped natural gas supply network over the next few years. “We hope to cover nine lakh households over the next eight years under the piped natural gas network,” he said. Once the conventional cylinder gas supply system is replaced with piped gas supply, the cost would go down by 35 to 40%, officials said here on Tuesday.About 11lakh households in the district are now using liquefied petroleum gas, chief general manager (retail sales) V Gopalakrishnan told reporters. “Piped supply will reduce several distribution cost heads and the benefits will in turn be transferred to the customers, ultimately bringing down the retail cost of natural gas.”As part of its expansion plans, IOCL has also planned to establish compressed natural gas (CNG) filling points at 41 fuel stations in Coimbatore for the benefit of motorists. This is likely to be done by September – October next year.In all, the company will be establishing 273 CNG filling points over the next eight years in the district.Stating that the cost of setting up one CNG filling point was around Rs 70lakh, Gopalakrishnan said IOCL will be investing Rs 1,500crore in the district to establish CNG stations and develop distribution network.
