Coimbatore: In a bid to make it more convenient for people in far-flung villages to apply for learner’s licence, the transport department is conducting registration drives at such places. The department plans to conduct one such camp at Sarkarpathi, a tribal village 40km away from Pollachi, on Monday. “A team will visit the village with all the required equipment, including computers, to issue learner’s licence to everyone interested. We will tie up with a driving school in the village for the drive. Applicants need to bring address proof — Aadhaar card or voter ID card — and pay Rs 300,” joint transport commissioner Krishnamoorthy said.As many as 125 people are expected to attend the camp. “While Rs 230 is the fee for applying for learner’s licence for two-wheelers online, Rs 70 goes towards the driving school as service fee. This way, people do not need to come all the way to Coimbatore, Mettupalayam or Pollachi to apply, spend an entire day, money on transport and then pay brokers to get it,” the commissioner said.Though the process has moved online, many people living in remote areas travel a distance to access a computer and internet and seek the help of someone who knows how to apply.“Those who need training or driving classes will be linked to the nearest driving school. We will fix a reasonable rate that the school can charge these people,” Krishnamoorthy told TOI.The officials of the department have so far conducted such camps in three villages and issued more than 200 learner’s licences so far. “We visited Kamanaickenpalayam, near Palladam, on Wednesday and issued 125 learner’s licences. We issued more than 30 in Bandalur and 120 in Vellaikovil,” said a transport officer. However, for acquiring the licence, people still have to visit one of the regional transport offices in the plains, drive a vehicle and get their photos clicked.
