Students draw, paint their way to make world a better place

Besides the sheer skill and talent, the art works showed what students are capable of if they were given a chance to dream.The platform was the first edition of Colour Splash, where students were invited to paint their imagination on canvas and showcase their creative potential by portraying aesthetically various inventions that could make the world a better place. Coimbatore: Students’ imagination took colourful wings as around 500 of them from schools across the district drew and painted their ‘inventions’ to make the world a better place at the Hindustan College of Arts and Science on Avinashi Road here on Friday morning.From simple water purification systems to peace robot birds and UV ray absorbent satellites, their inventions left the jury surprised. “Many of them came up with simple ideas that could be implemented, while others came up with ideas that make us realize how knowledgeable children are,” Jeevanantham said.Soundarajan, art teacher with SSVM School, said competitions like this were critical for children to improve their skills.

The event was organized jointly by the Times NIE (Newspapers in Education) and Nippon Paints.The first prize in the junior category went to P Sarvesh, a Class VIII student of Lisieux Matriculation Higher Secondary School for the portrayal of a peace bird robot, which will fly around spreading awareness on child labour, use of plastic and wastage of natural resources, among others. Abhijit’s work showed a tree that bears ideas on saving the nature, while the latter’s work showed a system which could be used to derive energy by burning plastic.In the senior category, Pavithra P D, of GKD Matriculation school, grabbed the first prize, while the second and third prizes were secured by Shalini, of SSVM, Alangambu, and Kushi Amruth, of Chinmaya International Residential School.The jury, which included popular artists Jeevanantham, praised the children for putting up a stiff competition. “Many of them came up with simple ideas that could be implemented, while others came up with ideas that make us realize how knowledgeable children are,” Jeevanantham said.Soundarajan, art teacher with SSVM School, said competitions like this were critical for children to improve their skills. “A student may think he or she is good, but only if they participate in competitions they will know where they stand and how much they have to improve.”Students, who walked away with prizes such as Samsung neo phone, digital drawing pads and portronics headsets, admitted that competitions like this would motivate them to work harder on improving their skills.
