Chinna Thambi captured again

Two kumki elephants -Khaleem and Suyambu- were also brought to the spot, where Chinna Thambi had been camping for the past five days.The darting team comprised Sathyamangalam tiger reserve surgeon K Asokan, Udumalpet forest range deputy director and Tirupur district forest officer Dhileep and former range officer Thangaraj Panneerselvam.Before darting and capturing the wild elephant, forest officials used a helicam to spot Chinna Thambi in a sugarcane field. They utilized only kumki elephants to push Chinna Thambi not earthmover.Initially, Chinna Thambi was reluctant to move inside the vehicle but it moved forward.The experienced kumki elephant Khaleem, which maintains a clean record in all its capturing operations so far, pushed Chinna Thambi from behind.When Chinna Thambi was about to be boarded onto the truck, Suyambu was given a chance to push the tusker since it would be a good training to the growing kumki. After it was spotted, they fielded two kumki elephants to chase Chinna Thambi out of the field.The veterinarians stood in three different places with darts containing 8ml sedative drug, including xylazine and ketamine, as the kumkis chased Chinna Thambi.The veterinarians managed to dart the tusker with sedative drug only in their fifth attempt.Mahouts of the kumkis immediately tied ropes around tranquillized Chinna Thambi’s neck and back limbs. Tirupur: The forest department captured the crop-raiding wild elephant Chinna Thambi at Sarkar Kannadipudur village near Madathukulam in Tirupur district on Friday, ending its 15-day sojourn in non-forest areas It took more than seven hours for the forest department officials to capture the 25-year-old elephant.Unlike the earlier operation at Thadagam valley on January 25, this time the wild tusker was captured without any visible severe injuries.Two days after the Madras high court gave permission to capture Chinna Thambi, more than 100 personnel from the forest department and a veterinarian team descended on Sarkar Kannadipudur village around 7am on Friday. They also removed the radio collar from the tusker which was fixed on January 25.Slowly, Chinna Thambi was driven, with the help of kumki elephants, towards a temporary ramp set up by the authorities in a plantation field, where truck utilized for transporting him was parked.The truck, brought from Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, was equipped with a winch to pull Chinna Thambi onto the vehicle.Six ropes were tied to four limbs and neck of Chinna Thambi for the pulling purpose.As the HC strictly directed that the capturing operation should not inflict severe injuries to Chinna Thambi, the forest department carefully boarded the elephant onto the truck.
