Coimbatore: The city is facing a drinking water shortage with many areas getting water only once is 10 days. The city corporation, bracing for the summer season It has been nine days since Cheran Ma Nagar received drinking water, said Anant Joshi, a resident of Nagpur in Maharashtra, who had come down to visit his family here. “How are we supposed to manage with water stored in tank? We are forced to use bore well water and are borrowing drinking water from neighbours. Never once we faced a water shortage for such a long time when we were in Nagpur. Even though the Coimbatore corporation is selected to be one of the smart cities, it fails to provide even the most basic necessities to the public. I tried to inform the corporation officials, including the commissioner, about the crisis, but the officials are clueless,” he said.R Gayathri, a former councillor, said that the residents of Saibaba Colony, who had been receiving water once in four days, are now getting it only once in seven days. “It is mainly because of multiple leakages in pipelines and the widened supply cycle. The corporation officials are attending to the leakages, but as the pipelines are decades-old and worn-out. Steps should be taken to replace the old pipelines instead of fixing the leaks,” she said.Residents of Anna Nagar and Lakshmana Konar Street said they get water only in the midnight. “As the pressure is very low, the quantum of water we get is very less. We have to spend the entire night to fill even 10 buckets,” Gayathri added.T Rajeshwari of Selvapuram said the area receives water only in 10 days. “We get water from the midnight till six in the morning.”Meanwhile, corporation officials said that of the 250 or so complaints they receive a weak, more than 50% are water-related. “Water supply is delayed mainly because of pipeline leakage. We have deployed workers to fix them. The issue will be solved once the 24/7 water supply scheme is implemented.” an official said.
