Coimbatore: District collector K Rajamani on Thursday informed political parties that they must get permission from local bodies as per high court order to erect flex banners on the roadsides.In a meeting with representatives of political parties, police, representatives from 37 town panchayats, 12 panchayat unions and flex banner printers, the collector said if an illegal banner was found erected, the local body would tear it down. Rajamani instructed the local bodies to permit hoardings only in prescribed areas and roads.He said as per the Madras high court’s order, temporary flex banners can be erected only if they do not create any public disturbance.“As per the court order, any political party wanting to put up a flex banner needs to get a ‘no objection certificate’ from the police and the local body. The banner should stick to specified sizes, location and duration,” said an official from the district administration.The collector instructed the local bodies not to allow flex banners on roads with width of less than 10ft. Flex banners can ideally be permitted only on roads with a width of 40ft.The collector also warned that flex banners erected without permissions or found flouting rules will be pulled down. If anyone stops an officer from pulling down an illegally erected flex banner, he can be imprisoned up to one year and fined Rs 5,000, he added.
