Young scientists learn to read photosynthetic efficiency

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) on Thursday trained 50 young scientists and students to check photosynthetic efficiency of plants.“Due to frequently prevailing drought conditions or high temperatures, the productivity of many plants start reducing. Their ability to perform photosynthesis comes down,” head of crop physiology department P Jeyaprakash said. The department taught the scientists and students to use portable photosynthesis system, an equipment that measures photosynthetic efficiency. If it is below par, we need to act in the form of nutrient management or hormonal stimulation,” said Jeyaprakash. “You can take it next to a living plant’s leaves and check the photosynthesis being performed and the amount of water being transpired. “Our aim is to ensure maximum productivity with minimum water consumption.”The department hopes more students and scientists will come up with projects and research initiatives to increase crop productivity in the face of constantly increasing temperatures and falling water resources.
