Salem reels under heat as temp crosses 40ºC

Salem: It’s not yet May, but people of Salem district have been facing the heat, literally , as the mercury has stayed above 40.5ºC for the past three days. The Meteorological department said temperature would rise in the coming days.“The average temperature in the district stood between 39.5ºC and 40.5ºC for the past one week. On Thursday, it recorded the maximum of 40.88ºC,” said a senior official in the Meteorological department, adding, “It would go beyond 42ºC in the coming days.”Many people decided to stay indoors between 9am and 5pm rather than come out and face the scorching sun.“I could feel the heat even at 10 in the night,” said M Kokila, one of the residents in Kannakurichi in Salem town, adding, “I started to sleep outside my house to avoid sultriness.”Earlier, the average temperature was around 35ºC in the first week of March and it crossed to 37.5ºC degree Fahrenheit in the mid of March.The mercury hovers in the same range in the neighbouring districts too, with 39.44ºC recorded in Erode district, 39.5ºC in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts and 40.55ºC in Namakkal district on Saturday.
