  • | Tuesday | 18th July, 2017

The city police have held discussions with the management of Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) on reducing accidents involving pedestrians in front of the hospital. When contacted, KMCH sources said that the management was ready to erect a skywalk for the safety of pedestrians. “We have put forward two suggestions - a skywalk across Avinashi Road and setting up of a blinking signal to reduce the speed. The measure was taken after two pedestrians were hit by speeding vehicles while they were crossing the Avinashi road in front of the hospital. While there was adequate area for the landing of skywalk inside the hospital premises, landing on the other side remains an issue due to less space.

more-in The city police have held discussions with the management of Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) on reducing accidents involving pedestrians in front of the hospital. The measure was taken after two pedestrians were hit by speeding vehicles while they were crossing the Avinashi road in front of the hospital. In the first incident reported on July 6, a 39-year-old woman from Tirupur was killed after she was hit by a speeding two-wheeler. Three others, including two of her relatives, were also injured in the incident. A few days later, another woman was hit by a two-wheeler at the same spot. Blinking signal Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M. Durai said that discussions were held with the hospital management on the steps to be taken to reduce fatal accidents in front of the hospital. “We have put forward two suggestions - a skywalk across Avinashi Road and setting up of a blinking signal to reduce the speed. The hospital has conveyed their readiness to construct a skywalk that will require permission from the Highways Department as well as from Corporation. The two bodies will be approached soon,” said Mr. Durai. The accidents mainly occur when pedestrians cross the road in front of the second entrance of the hospital. Meanwhile, there is a traffic signal in front of the main entrance of the hospital along with a zebra line for pedestrian crossing. When contacted, KMCH sources said that the management was ready to erect a skywalk for the safety of pedestrians. While there was adequate area for the landing of skywalk inside the hospital premises, landing on the other side remains an issue due to less space. “We have also requested the police department to activate the signal in front of the main gate to control the speed of vehicles,” the hospital sources said.
