Tobacco products seized from inter-state bus in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: The food safety department seized 10 boxes of tobacco products, worth Rs 80,000, from an inter-state bus early Thursday morning.The boxes were found containing Hans, a chewable version of tobacco, and a tobacco paste and chewable pieces added to paan. We have also roped in police," he said.Oral consumption of tobacco is banned under both the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act of 2013 and Food Safety and Standards Act of India Act. "We stopped and checked all buses coming from Bangalore and found 10 boxes of tobacco products in one of them," said designated food safety officer Dr Vijay. The bus from Bangalore was stopped at the Karumathampatti checkpost. "Our investigations show that the consignment was supposed to be collected a pan-beeda stall owner in Thomas Street at R S Puram, but investigations are still on.
