Man, four friends arrested for robbing his goldsmith uncle in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Days after a goldsmith was robbed of 110 sovereigns of gold at Periyanaickenpalayam here on Monday, police arrested a five-member gang headed by the victim's relative on Thursday. The five divided the stolen ornaments equally among them.The police said further investigation was on. He told the police that he spilled the beans on his uncle's business deals to his friends and they hatched a conspiracy to rob him.On the fateful day, Ramesh waited at Mettupalayam Road and helped his friends to identity of his uncle. Later, Ramesh left for his house while his accomplices executed the plan. The police have recovered from them the stolen gold ornaments.The arrested were identified as N Ramesh, 32, of Telungupalayam and his friends S Babu, 37, from Thekkupalayam; N Kannan alias Nandha, 35, a two wheeler mechanic from Annur; K Vadivel, 34, from Annur; and V Arun, 26, of MGR Nagar at Virudhachalam in Cuddalore district.

The mastermind behind the crime was Ramesh, the victim's elder sister's son, who was also a goldsmith, the police said.According to investigating officials, a four-member gang robbed S Eswaran, 47, a goldsmith from Thiruvenkadam Nagar at Telungupalayam, while he was on his way to Udhagamandalam in Nilgiris district on Monday to deliver the order for 10 gold necklaces he received from Suraj Jewellery shop there.As Eswaran was waiting for bus on Mettupalayam Road, a call taxi driver approached him and offered a ride to Udhagamandalam for Rs 100. When the car reached near a railway bridge on Kottaipirivu-Onnipalayam Road at Pilichi, other passengers robbed him of the gold necklaces at knifepoint and fled.Eswaran lodged a complaint with the Periyanaickenpalayam police, who registered a case against unidentified persons under Sections 392 ( robbery ) read with 397 of the IPC.A special team grilled Eswaran's elder sister's son Ramesh, who confessed to the crime.
