The police have decided not to use recently introduced signal controllers until enabling them with amber indicator in addition to red and green signals. The mini signal controllers will be made into use after enabling provision for turning on amber indication (warning signal) while switching between red and green. Turning red or green signal all of a sudden might create confusion among motorists. They will be used after enabling provision for amber lighting,” said M. Durai, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic). “When introduced, the signal controller had only provision for turning on red and green signals.

The mini signal controllers will be made into use after enabling provision for turning on amber indication (warning signal) while switching between red and green. The mini signal controller was introduced last month which the cop on duty at the traffic umbrella can use to change signals according to the traffic conditions. The controller was introduced to aid smooth passage for emergency service like ambulances and fire fighting vehicles. “When introduced, the signal controller had only provision for turning on red and green signals. Turning red or green signal all of a sudden might create confusion among motorists. They will be used after enabling provision for amber lighting,” said M. Durai, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic). Senior officials said that traffic police would be given training on using the controllers so as not to create confusion among motorists while using it. Meanwhile, UPS power backup facility is being introduced at 56 main traffic signals within the city. Already, the police have installed UPS at around 30 traffic signals.
