According to R. Narendra Bose, the manager of Coimbatore outlet of Poompuhar, a six-day camp was held in Coimbatore recently and about 80 artisans have registered with it. They are into wood crafting, paper quilling, fancy jewellery making, coconut shell and paper mache products, and Thanjavur painting. Artisans who are registered with Poompuhar will get a webpage free of cost on its website. The page will have details and photographs of the products they make. These details will be collected by Poompuhar and uploaded. This is an effort to take the works of the artisans to the global market. The project was launched by the Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami recently with details of nearly 500 artisans from different parts of the State. The uploading process is on. Following the camp in Coimbatore, a four-day programme will be held in the Nilgiris from Friday. Toda and artisans from other tribal settlements will be included. “We have given application forms to those in the stone carving cluster at Thirumuruganpoondi too. Even artisans who work out of home individually can register,” he said. All enquiries generated on the website will be sent to the craftsmen through Poompuhar, he said. In clusters such as Kumbakonam, 300 to 500 people have registered. Efforts are on to create better awareness in Coimbatore region too, he added.
