2 city girls aim to make a mark in motorsports

Coimbatore: With the city being a motorsports hub, there has been a lacuna in the junior category for nearly eight years as not a single child from Coimbatore has taken part in any form of motorsports. He said he was glad that children and especially girls were taking it up. Most of the participants have only come in seniors and super seniors.Two city girls are aiming to break the pattern by taking part in nationals next year. My grandfather has taken me to some of the races and he keeps motivating me to take it up. "My father has taken me to several events which inspired me to take up the sport," she said.

Most of the participants have only come in seniors and super seniors.Two city girls are aiming to break the pattern by taking part in nationals next year. They are now gearing up to take part in professional training in Karting in Bengaluru that will be held on next week.A Ashmita,studying at Udhagamandalam. "I love driving and it is my passion but I cannot get into a car unless I am 18. My grandfather has taken me to some of the races and he keeps motivating me to take it up. So this way, I can drive fulfilling my passion and also train myself in the sport," said A Ashmita, 10, who is studying at Udhagamandalam.Her grandfather, Ramesh Kumar, who is an FMSCI official himself with an experience in motorsports for nearly three decades said he wanted his granddaughter to start at an early age.For 13-year-old Shrvanthika Lakshmi, karting is a serious affair. "My father has taken me to several events which inspired me to take up the sport," she said. She will accompany Ashmita at the NICO Kartopia next week.Sanjeev Rajan chairman of the Karting commission, Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India said it has been eight years since a child below the age of 15 took part in a sporting event in Coimbatore. He said he was glad that children and especially girls were taking it up.
