The library, which was set up in 1958 and is the only one in the city to be managed by the district administration, gets around 50 to 60 readers a day. It has 450 registered readers. To make it more popular and increase footfall, the administration has decided to introduce e-library facility. Rs 12 lakh has been allocated for the project initially, said assistant information officer Pathani Rout. It will be completed within three months.As part of the e-library, six computers will be installed in the library. Readers will be able to access and download text books, journals, reference books and those on competitive exams in the digital format. A separate room will be built to house the computers. "Readers have been demanding this facility for long time. If the response is good, we will increase the number of computers," an official said.At present, the library does not have a computer. It has over 20,000 books, including several rare ones. "We saw that students preparing for different competitive exams were facing problems as the library had no computers. The e-library facility will benefit them," said Rout.The library has got text books and books on competitive exams worth Rs 20,000 this year. It has also started a special section on women-centric books and those for children. The section also has a good collection of women's magazines. "Our aim is to encourage the habit of reading. We have plans to organize seminars in schools and in the library itself to promote this special section," said an official of the library.
