CUTTACK: The Orissa high court on Monday granted bail to industrialist Mahimananda Mishra in connection with the two cases of attempt to murder pending against him in Cuttack and Paradip.Mishra was arrested in December 2016 from Bangkok for allegedly masterminding the alleged murder of one Mahendra Swain, general manager of a stevedoring company - Seaways Shipping - in Paradip. Subsequently, two more cases of attempt to murder were lodged against him in Cuttack and Paradip.The Bench of Justice D Dash granted the bail to Mishra on the condition that he will not influence any witness of the cases neither will he tamper with the evidences. The court has asked Mishra to deposit a cash surety of Rs 1 lakh."As the high court has allowed bail to my client in two cases, now decks have been cleared for his release from jail," said Mishra's counsel Jaydeep Pal.Earlier, the high court on May 16 last year had granted bail to Mishra, who is managing director of Odisha Stevedores Limited (OSL), in connection with the alleged murder Swain. However, as two more cases of attempt to murder were pending against him, Mishra was not able to walk out of the jail.The two cases in which Mishra was given bail on Monday include attempt to murder of a lawyer, Abhay Bhatt, in 2013 in Cuttack. According to the case details, bombs were hurled at the lawyer allegedly at Mishra's behest and Bhatt was injured in the incident. The second case is related to a firing incident at Tarinigada in Paradip in 2016. According to police, at the instruction of Mishra, a few miscreants had opened fire on two youths at Taranidaga.The victims had sustained injuries in the mishap and a case was registered against Mishra, who has been undergoing treatment at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, for last one year.
