Odisha govt to extend piped water supply to six uncovered wards in Cuttack

Piped water is now being supplied in 44 of the 59 wards under the municipal corporation area. CUTTACK: The state government's public health engineering organization (PHEO) has started work on the construction of two water treatment plants to extend the drinking water distribution network to six wards (under the Cuttack Municipal Corporation ) that are not covered by piped water supply.The project, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 8 crore, has been undertaken with funds received under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) scheme. ""The projects in the six wards, targeted to be completed by September, will add another 236 km of pipeline to the existing 551km drinking water supply distribution network in the city," Ghadei said.Water will be drawn from the Mahanadi and the Kuakhai and supplied through pipelines to the water treatment plants at Jagatpur and Pratapnagari, respectively. While nine wards are partially covered, the remaining six are uncovered.Executive engineer, PHEO (Cuttack division), Sushant Ghadei said, "Work has started on two water treatment plants - a six million litres per day capacity plant at Jagatpur and another eight million litres per day capacity plant at Pratapnagari - for water to be supplied to two wards (48 and 49) and four wards (56, 57, 58 and 59) respectively. "The new pipelines project has been planned to supply 14 million litres per day in the six wards," Ghadei said.A PHEO official said the two adjoining wards (48 and 49), to be supplied drinking water through the treatment plant at Jagatpur with two overhead tanks, constitute Nimpur, Jagatpur, Najarpur, Sikaripur, Laxmanpur, Fakirpur, Bhubanpur, N Khaira, Immamnagar, Tarola, Jagatpur Industrial Estate, Podabara, Nuasahi, Station Bazaar, Jagatpur Golei Chhak and Nankarimpur.
