Lawyers to cease work on February 11, 12

CUTTACK: Lawyers of the Orissa high court and all other subordinate courts across the state will cease work for two days from Monday.Odisha State Bar Council (OSBC) secretary Jajati Kesari Samantasinghar said the 165 bar associations across the state will abstain from court work in response to a nationwide call given by the Bar Council of India (BCI) to press for demands related to their welfare.On February 11, the bar associations will take out rallies and submit memoranda, addressed to the Prime Minister, to the administrative heads in their respective areas. The budgetary allocation is expected to cover expenses like insurance cover for lawyers and their families (dependants) and a stipend of at least Rs 10,000 per month for new entrants to the bar up to five years of practice.Other demands include chamber, adequate building/accommodation/sitting facilities, well-equipped libraries, e-libraries, internet facilities and toilets for all bar associations and framing of schemes by the government to acquire land at cheaper rates for housing requirement of advocates. "The representatives of bar associations will converge on the state capital on February 12 to submit a memorandum, addressed to the Prime Minister, to the governor," the OSBC secretary said.Orissa High Court Bar Association secretary Satyabrata Mohanty said the rallies during the two days will be conducted in accordance with the decision taken at a meeting of the BCI with the representatives of the state bar councils and high court bar associations on February 2 to raise awareness about their demands.The BCI has called a nationwide bandh urging lawyers to hit the streets to press for their longstanding demands, including budgetary allocation for financial protection, stipend and insurance cover for them and their families, Mohanty said.According to the BCI release, a demand has been made for an annual budgetary allocation of Rs 5,000 crore for lawyers and litigant welfare.
