CUTTACK: The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) launched door-to-door garbage collection on Sunday. This was started on an experimental basis in Ward 9. This is the first time that the CMC has taken this initiative.With this, the civic body hopes to lay the groundwork to implement the Solid Waste Management Bye Laws, 2017. The bye laws aim at better waste segregation and disposal.Commissioner of CMC Sarat Nayak said the door-to-door collection process would be carried out by sanitation workers. "We plan to extend the process to the 58 other wards in phases," he said. Areas under Ward 9 include Srivihar Colony, Stewart Patna , Kanika Rajbati, parts of Tulsipur, Deula Sahi and Matha Sahi, Revenue Colony, parts around the collector's residence, Christ College and Daya Ashram."Door-to-door garbage collection is necessary for maintaining cleanliness," said Gouribala Patnaik, a resident of Srivihar Colony.The term of the last elected municipal council had ended on February 12. "The door-to-door collection is the primary focus. Segregation will be implemented later," said Bikash Ranjan Behera, former corporator of Ward 9. Additional commissioner Suman Behera said, "We plan to extend the door-to-door garbage collection facility to at least one ward every month."
