The farmers` agitation took an ugly shape on Republic Day when the police tried to stop the tractor`s rally from creating ruckus at the Red Fort in Delhi. The farmers not only vandalised the premises but went upto the ramparts and hoised the Khalsa flag.

As scheduled, the agitating farmers had entered Delhi from Singhu Border in the wee hours. The problem started when the farmers deviating from their planned route for the tractor parade and hoisted flags at the Red Fort in the national capital.  

Earlier, the farmers had deviated from the designated route for the proposed tractor parade against the new farm laws and moved toward ITO in central Delhi. 

Clashes broke out between police and protesting farmers after the latter reached ITO and tried to push towards Lutyen`s Delhi, prompting the force to use lathi-charge and tear gas shells against them.

The Delhi Police had permitted the farmers protesting the three farm laws to hold their tractor parade on selected routes only after the official Republic Day parade on the Rajpath concludes since the route has its significance on Republic Day.

The farmers who had no consideration for vandalising the Red Fort premises proudly said, they had come to deliver a message to the Modi government, and have done the job successfully. 

After nearly 90-minutes of the scuffle, the police removed protesting farmers from Red Fort premises. The police later resorted to a lathi-charge to vacate the Red Fort premises. Continuous announcements were being made asking the protesters to leave the complex peacefully.

``Nihangs`` (traditional Sikh warriors), forced their way into the Red Fort and hoisted a flag from the staff from which the prime minister unfurls the tricolour on Independence Day. 

In 80`s a similar farmers` agitation made headlines when then farmer leader Mohinder Singh Tikait held a rally at the Boat Club, he and his men entered the Red Fort and vandalised the premises. The day is still regarded as a shameful day in farmers` a gitation. Today`s protest reminded of that incedent. 

However, there is no doudt that the farmers` protest that actually began at the Singu Border to protest against the three Argi laws has deviated from its cause and has been hijacked by vested interests turning it into a political issue.
