Budget 2023: No income tax up to Rs 7 lakh

BY ALOK VERMA    Tax for income of Rs 0-3 lakh is nil; income above Rs 3 lakh and up to Rs 5 lakh to be taxed at 5%; income of above Rs 6 lakh and up to Rs 9 lakh to be taxed at 10%; income above Rs 12 lakh and up to Rs 15 lakh to be taxed at 20%; and income above Rs 15 lakh to be taxed at Rs 30%.

Now there will be no income tax up to Rs 7 lakh in the new tax regime, announced Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2023 on Wednesday. 

The government has introduced a slew of changes to the `new income tax slab` in order to reduce the tax liabilities for individuals. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the tax rebate has been extended on income up to Rs 7 lakh in new tax regime as per Section 87A, as against Rs 5 lakh. The highest surcharge rate has been reduced to 25 percent from 37 percent in the new slab
