Students groups of Jamia Millia Islamia protested on Tuesday against the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and demanded its withdrawal by the Centre. They addressed a press conference near one of the university gates and interacted with the media from inside the campus, while Delhi Police remained stationed outside. Journalists, who arrived in large numbers at the campus to report, were not allowed entry. The students called for the repeal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, and the release of all students booked in anti-CAA protests nearly four years ago. Protesting students questioned the Governments CCA move and said, "The implementation of the CAA is a political strategy to gain more votes by the BJP before the 2024 General Elections." Slogans such as "Delhi Police wapas jao" and "Inqalab Zindabad" echoed across the campus. Students also demanded "demilitarization" of the university campus as security in the area was beefed up after the Government notified rules for implementation of the CAA on Monday. A senior police officer said the security around the Jamia campus has been beefed up to prevent any further gathering outside the campus. The Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in the area and drones are also being used to monitor the situation. Protesting students said implementation of CAA is discriminatory and partial, particularly towards Muslims. Some students were also seen with posters "We support CAA" at the campus. A student said the protesters demand is illogical and CAA is beneficial for the nation. "NSUI Jamia Millia Islamia protests against the decision of the Central Government to implement the unconstitutional CAA," a statement by NSUIs Jamia unit said. A group of students led by the Muslim Students Federation (MSF) raised slogans against the Modi Government and the Delhi Police. Jamias officiating vice-chancellor, Eqbal Hussain, said the campus should not be turned into a protest site. He said the university is for study, not politics, and protests will not be tolerated during the ongoing session. The students protested inside the campus, he said. Jamia was the epicentre of the anti-CAA protests in 2019-2020.
