City power demand clocks seasons highest

Amid hot and dry weather, Delhis peak power demand has clocked this seasons highest. According to Real time data from State Load Despatch Center, at 3:26 pm on Thursday, it clocked 6780 MW; the seasons highest this year. The highest ever peak power demand in Delhi was 7,695 MW in the summer of 2022. Last year, the highest it touched was 7,438 MW. The distribution companies, or discoms, said Delhis peak power demand this summer may cross 8,000 MW for the first time and may reach up to 8,200 MW.  A BSES spokesperson said that the BRPL and BYPL discoms of the company successfully met the peak power demand in their respective areas. It is worthwhile to note that on each of the days of May 2024 so far, Delhis peak power demand is more than that of May 2023. In the first 16 days of May last year, Delhis peak power demand had clocked 5781 MW last year. Weather has a profound impact on the power demand. This was clearly visible in Delhi even during the April 2024 in comparison to April of 2023.  In April 2024, Delhis peak power demand ranged between 3809 MW and 5447 MW. As opposed to this, Delhis peak power demand during April 2023 ranged between 3388 MW and 5422 MW, BSES spokesperson said. BSES spokesperson said On their part, BRPL and BYPL successfully met the peak power demand of 2861 MW and 1488 MW respectively. The power demand can be attributed to weather conditions that led residents to use more air conditioning / coolers, leading to an increase in electricity consumption. It is interesting to know you know, air conditioning can contribute to 30-50% of a households or companys yearly energy expense? According to SLDC data, after clocking a record power demand of 7695 MW in 2022, Delhis peak power demand during the summers of 2024 may cross the 8000 MW for the first time- reaching upto 8200 MW. Last year, Delhis peak power demand had clocked 7438 MW. Peak power demand in BRPL area of South and West Delhi, which had clocked  3250 MW and 3389  MW during the summers of 2023 and 2022 respectively, is expected to reach around 3679 MW during the summers of 2024.
