Left-wing DTF wins DUTA president post, executive post evenly shared by DTF and NDTF

It has been one of the closely contested election in the recent history of the association. Fifteen other executive council members were also elected from various teachers` groups for which 22 candidates were in fray.

NEW DELHI: Left-affiliated Democratic Teachers` Front (DTF) candidate Nandita Narain won the presidential elections of the Delhi University Teachers` Association for the second consecutive term on Friday. The counting ended at around 1.20am after a lot of drama over invalid votes being contested by the BJP-backed National Democratic Teachers` Front and Academics for Action and Development and Indian National Teachers` Congress alliance.

Narain, who has been a vocal critic of the implementation of semester system and the four-year undergraduate programme, and now of the Choice Based Credit System won the elections getting 2,390 votes. The mathematics professor of St Stephens defeated her closest competitor V S Negi of NDTF by 225 votes. It has been one of the closely contested election in the recent history of the association.

Negi polled 2165 votes. AAD-INTEC candidate Sanjay Kumar polled 950 votes while there were 536 invalid votes. Total votes polled was 6068.

Fifteen other executive council members were also elected from various teachers` groups for which 22 candidates were in fray. The council will now choose the vice president, secretary, joint secretary and treasurer from among its members with nine votes required to win each post. The voting process, which saw the participation of a large number of teachers, took place from 10am to 5pm on Thursday and counting of votes went past midnight .
